We sent our engineer Dylan Narsing down with a set of European made axle weigh pads to test a BMW, Lambo, Porsche and Audi.

First to be tested was the Audi RSQ8, which is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 said to produce 600hp and 800Nm of torque.

Next up was the BMW X5 Competition, with its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 claimed to offer 625hp and 800Nm of torque.

The third SUV they tested was the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. Using a very similar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 to the Audi, it’s claimed to kick out 640hp and 850Nm.

Last but not least was the Lamborghini Urus Performante. Again using a version of the V8 found in the Audi and Porsche, it’s said to deliver 666hp and 850Nm.

Will any cars outperform their claimed figures? Or even worse, will any underperform?! Watch the video to see for yourself!

What are Vehicle Weighing Pads?

Vehicle Weighing Pads are a convenient solution for quickly and accurately calculating the loads on different types of vehicles, including lorries, vans, and HGVs. These pads are particularly useful for checking individual axles and ensuring that the total gross weight of the vehicle does not exceed the maximum limit.

By using two weigh pads, an axle weighing system can be easily set up to provide precise load measurements with an accuracy of 0.5%. Knowing the weight of your vehicle is important for safe and legal travel on public roads, and our Dini Argeo and Intercomp vehicle weighing pads offer a simple and reliable method of doing so.

The portability of these pads allows them to be easily transported from one site to another or stored away when not in use. Investing in weigh pads can help avoid costly fines for overloaded vehicles, which can sometimes exceed the cost of the pads themselves.

Carwow, the online platform for selling vehicles, recently invited us to join them on their YouTube channel to weigh several supercars. We sent our engineer Dylan Narsing down with a set of axle weigh pads to weigh three different Lamborghinis: a Huracan STO, an Aventador SVJ and a Urus Performante.

Each of these three supercars comes equipped with a different engine & power output. The Huracan STO is first up, and it arrives with a 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 which can apparently produce 640hp. Following that they look at the Urus Performante, which is packing a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can pull 666hp. And then finally there’s the Aventador SVJ, packing a 6.5-litre V12 which can apparently put down 770hp.

In addition to finding out what their power output figures are, Carwow put each car on the scales to find out how much they really weigh!

How do you think this one will play out – will the cars be putting down what Lamborghini says they are? And will they be lighter or heavier than their claimed weight? Watch the video below to find out!

Vehicle Weighing Pads are used to quickly and easily calculate loads on vehicles such as lorries, vans and HGVs. They are useful for checking individual axles and the total gross weight of the vehicle is not more than the maximum permitted.

With the use of two weigh pads, it becomes easy to set up an axle weighing system that can provide you with the ability to check loads to an accuracy of 0.5%. It is important that operators of vehicles know the weights of their vehicles when travelling on the roads.

Our vehicle weighing pads from Dini Argeo and Intercomp offer a simple and reliable method of accurately measuring the load on a truck, lorry or van.
Fines for overloaded vehicles can often be greater than the cost of a new set of vehicle weighing pads.

Tags – Managing cost of vehicle weighing machines

Vehicle weighing machines are an important part of many industries.

They are used to measure the weight of vehicles and cargo, which is essential for ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.

Weighing machines come in a variety of different types, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. In this blog post, we will discuss how to manage the cost of different kinds of weighing machines.

General Costs

Different types of weighing machines have different costs.

The most expensive type of machine is the static weighing machine, which can cost upwards of £75,000.

For most businesses, however, the cost of a static weighing machine is not feasible. So, the next most expensive type of machine is the dynamic weighing machine, which typically costs between £25,000 and £50,000.

These machines are more accurate than static machines and can be used for a variety of different applications.

The least expensive type of machine is the portable weighing machine, which typically costs between £15,000 and £25,000.

Portable machines are less accurate than other types of machines but are much easier to move and set up.

Managing the Cost

The cost of a vehicle weighing machine is a significant investment for most businesses. However, there are a few things that you can do to manage the cost of your machine.

First, you should consider how often you will need to use the machine. If you only need to use the machine occasionally, you may be able to save money by renting or leasing a machine instead of purchasing one.

Second, you should consider the accuracy of the machine. More accurate machines typically cost more than less accurate machines. However, if accuracy is important for your business, it may be worth investing in a more expensive machine.

Finally, you should consider the features and functions that you need in a vehicle weighing machine. You may be able to save money by choosing a less feature-rich model.

The lighter the car, the easier it is to move around and the more fuel-efficient it is.

Over time, the difficulty of producing super-light road vehicles has increased as a result of crash structuring and mandated safety equipment.

Some of the cars on this list come before that, and there are a few of the lightest production vehicles that you wouldn’t want to be in an accident in while driving!

1. 1957–1975 Fiat 500: 500 kg

The excellent little four-seater was Fiat’s adorable small town car before Mini stole the show.

The 500 name is derived from the original 479cc engine being rounded up to 500cc, rather than its 500 kg weight. Where the Mini had twice as much displacement, the Fiat 500 saved weight by having two fewer cylinders in its engine.

It stayed in production until 1976, with over 3.5 million units sold, and it was reborn in 2007, but with all of the features and conveniences we expect now.

2. 1959 Mini 850: 580 kg

The Mini was tiny, fashionable, and fuel-efficient, yet it could accommodate four people inside. It became so popular that a skirt was dubbed after it; however, we’re talking about the Mini since it weighed just 580 kg and had a lively 850-cc four-cylinder engine under the bonnet.

Although the first Mini remained in production until 1968, it gained weight when the British Motor Corporation decided to make it a little more robust and began using thicker steel.

The late 1950s and early 1960s models became popular with individuals wanting to race them, while the following versions became popular with everyone else.

3. 2020 Morgan 3 Wheeler: 524 kg

“The Morgan 3 Wheeler is a rebellion against sanitised, modern motoring,” according to the incredibly unique British company.

Each one is constructed of a handcrafted aluminium body and a tubular steel chassis, as well as a handcrafted ash wood frame.

A lack of a fourth wheel and any passenger seats or amenities, as well as the use of wood and aluminium to build the 3 Wheeler’s structure, help keep the weight down to 524 kg; a car designed to be enjoyed, not raced.

4. 1962 Lotus Elan: 584 kg

In Lotus-built road cars, Colin Chapman‘s idea of performance was based on simplicity and weight reduction, but it had to be reconciled with comfort and convenience; the Lotus Elan became the gold standard for performance.

To achieve its 584 kg weight, this was the first production car to use a steel backbone chassis and a fibreglass body.

The first Elan model ran until 1975, but it quickly began gaining weight as legislation increased and it became more refined.

5. 1986–1998 Citroen AX: 640 kg

The Citroen AX was created to be as fuel-efficient as a city car.

The lightest three-door hatchback design employed plastic panels in non-load bearing regions with careful use of various thicknesses of steel throughout to keep weight to 640 kg.

As time went on and this car developed more options, the AX did get heavier, especially in AX GT guise. Despite this, the AX GT still only came in at 722 kg, with a 1.4-litre engine making 101 horsepower, it was an impressive little hot hatch.

Rounding Up

Weight is the enemy for so many important automotive features like handling and performance – but for these cars above, not so much!

That said, it’s a no brainer – less weight means better efficiency and improved performance.

Tags – Why Are Electric Vehicles Getting Lighter?

In an attempt to lower carbon emissions, the UK government plans to ban the sale of conventional diesel and petrol cars by 2040, manufacturers have responded.

For instance, Ford announced their details of an £8 billion investment into electric vehicles as well as new entrants to the market such as Dyson.

The main goal for car manufacturers today is to find ways that improve the quality of their vehicles in different ways.

Such as offering more competitive prices, better security or a more attractive design.

The biggest though, is energy efficiency and that can only be improved by reducing the vehicle’s weight.

However, many consumers are under the impression that lighter vehicles are not as safe and reducing the weight usually means an increase in costs.

So is there a future for lightweight electric vehicles?

Let’s discuss this in more detail.

Why Electric Cars Need To Be Lighter

The reason why the government is planning to ban sales of diesel and petrol cars is to cut carbon emissions.

Essentially, reducing the weight of a vehicle means less energy will be required to accelerate the car.

Research suggests that if manufacturers are able to reduce the weight of a vehicle by 10%, it can boost fuel economy between 6-8% and at the moment, an electric motor is almost 125% heavier than a standard internal combustion engine.

However, by using lighter materials it can cut the weight of the car’s chassis by half.

With billions of vehicles driven every day, reducing emissions is a pressing concern for both manufacturers and consumers; fuel economy is one of the main priorities for customers when looking to buy a new vehicle.

Hence why vehicles need to be lighter to meet this goal – but because lightweight materials come at higher cost, the movement has been slow.

Could Magnesium Be The Solution?

With 1,000 metric tonnes of magnesium produced every year, this metal comes with a number of both economic and structural benefits.

To begin with, it’s 75% lighter than steel, 33% lighter than aluminium, and it is 100% recyclable.

Because it is produced from sea water, brines and minerals, offering unlimited reserves, it’s predicted that magnesium will almost entirely replace steel in automotive manufacturing in upcoming years.

However, magnesium comes with a price tag and its poor high-temperature resistance puts forward concerns.

As such, the automotive industry must optimise it in the right way, to provide better strength and stiffness in order to consider using magnesium as a lightweight alternative material.

Closing Thoughts

Overall, as we move towards an all-electric future, the need for better efficiency and lightweight materials is a major driver for the automotive industry.

Tags – Ways to Reduce Car Weight

By taking a “less is more” approach and reducing the weight of your car, you can actually enhance its performance and gain more speed on the track.

In simple terms, putting your car on a diet improves every performance aspect of your car.

For instance, less weight means your car accelerates quicker and it is easier for the brakes to slow the car down.

In addition, reducing the weight eases the pressure on the suspension, giving more control to the tyres to turn during steering as removing weight from higher up lowers the centre of gravity for better handling.

So, a light car is a fast car, but how do you reduce the weight?

Here are 4 effective ways…

1. Interior

Starting with the obvious, remove anything random you don’t need inside the car; e.g. ditch the spare wheel and jack.

Next you could take out the carpet, underlay and back seats, which could save you around 25kg.

In addition, you could remove the passenger seat (especially if these are electrically adjustable) as well as replacing the driver’s seat with a lightweight racing seat.

Keep in mind though, if you are removing some interior parts the car still needs to be legal for street use.

For instance, we suggested removing the spare wheel, but removing airbags would not be an option.

Lastly, if you can live without driving with music, strip out your stereo, particularly if you have amplifiers and sub-boxes.

2. Wheels

Standard alloy wheels are often made from an aesthetic point of view rather than looking at performance, and they can weigh a lot!

Typically, standard 18 inch alloys can weigh up to 12kg each, however there are lighter options that can weigh as little as 7kg, which may not sound like a lot, but will reduce the weight of your car overall.

One reason being, lighter wheels will reduce the rotational mass of the rims and therefore the suspension won’t need to work as hard – and you’ll see an improvement in acceleration.

3. Windows

Now we’re not saying get rid of the windows entirely – unless you aren’t using your car for leisure.

Whilst glass windows offer protection and help with aerodynamic features, switching to plastic can save you up to 25kg – plus, they’re cheaper to buy too.

With that in mind, consider switching to Plexiglass or Perspex, which is 50% lighter than glass, however it will be more susceptible to scratches.

4. Body Panels

If you’re serious about shedding some serious car weight, then it’s worth considering swapping your heavy steel or aluminium body panels with fiber reinforced plastic.

Whilst they may not always be the cheapest, carbon fiber is the strongest and lightest alternative, and can be used on the bonnet, front wings, boot lid and even the roof.

At the same time, carbon fiber will not look as sleek as carbon, but if you consider how much money you would spend on a paint job to fix dents and scratches – it quickly becomes a worthy investment.
