A Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) was stopped by Staffordshire police after the police team noted the load did not adhere to STGO regulations. The legal weight for a train is 44,000kg but this vehicle was carrying 56,400kg. Furthermore, the vehicle had a defective tyre.

This incident highlights the importance of adhering to weight regulations and maintaining one’s vehicle. According to the DVSA, the load should have been carried in two vehicles.  Overloading an HGV not only puts the driver in danger, but also other road users. In this case, had the load fallen off the vehicle it could have caused serious damage and potential injury to other motorists

Drivers must be aware of the weight of their vehicles and loads at all times to ensure they are within the law. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and seek professional advice. Maintaining your vehicle is also crucial to road safety; regular checks can help identify any issues before they cause problems on the roads

Road safety is a shared responsibility and everyone has a role to play in helping to keep our roads safe. This includes following weight regulations when driving HGVs and maintaining your vehicle so that it is safe to use on the roads. By doing our part, we can help make our roads a safer place for everyone.
