Yesterday, the Greater Manchester Police Traffic unit pulled over a car on the M60/62 motorway because their cargo was not properly secured. Despite the load being within its designated weight, a prohibition notice was issued and corrective measures put in place at the scene. The Greater Manchester Police Traffic Department issued a fixed penalty notice for an improperly secured load.

This event emphasises the significance of ensuring that all cargo is firmly secured before any travelling. The Department for Transport emphasises that it is the responsibility of both driver and employer to ensure proper loading practices, since an improperly secured load can result in hazardous traffic accidents. The importance of this has been highlighted in the wake of recent events, like Storm Ciara.

On their Twitter page, GMP Traffic shared the following incident with the cautionary caption “Another accident waiting to happen”, emphasising how critical it is to practise secure loading when driving on highways with heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). This event serves as a reminder of what could happen if we do not take our safety seriously. Furthermore, drivers should always double-check their loads before setting out from home or any other place. When travelling, it is essential to inspect the straps and ropes tied to your vehicle for any signs of wear or damage. Make sure that all items are securely fastened so they do not become loose during transit.

All drivers must take the time to inspect their cargo prior to hitting any route, yet extra vigilance is needed when driving HGVs on highways and motorways. GMP Traffic declared yesterday that vehicles overloaded with improper weight can lead to grave repercussions. Whether you’re heading for a short or long journey, all drivers are responsible for making sure their load is secure before departing onto public roads to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
