Dorset council has given his approval to a proposal from Portland Stone Ltd to utilise the 9.65-hectare site for inert waste, including a steel-framed waste management facility off Southwell Road at Coombefield Quarry North.

It is located 20 metres from the World Heritage seashore and areas of scientific or natural interest.

Up to 60,000 tonnes of material each year may be deposited. More than half of it is dubbed commercial or industrial. With this rate, the quarry will be fully utilised in roughly 17 years.

The contract includes the transfer of the old Waste Management Sites from Broadcroft Quarry to Coombefield Quarry, along with the replacement of existing structures on site with a waste reception and processing facility as well as hard surface area.

Incoming materials will be brought in skips, by HGV or small builder lorries/vans, and weighed and verified at the weighbridge.

The incoming waste stream will be treated, separated, and temporarily stored in the new transfer facility. A grab will be utilised to place materials on the picking station to be separated into different waste types into bays or skips after mixing waste, which includes mixtures of inert and non-inert debris.

The non-inert waste segments will be stored until a sufficient amount has been generated to be carried away for recycling or disposal.

The quarry has been in use, occasionally, since 1951, with a mine being added to the south quarry in later years.
