The Beds, Cambs & Herts Road Policing Unit has reported from the M25 in St Albans that a vehicle had been travelling at nearly 38% over its maximum gross weight. This is an example of how serious the consequences can be if you exceed your vehicle’s weight limit.

While the permitted weight was 3500kg , the vehicle weighed 4820, carrying an extra load of 1320 kgs (37.7%). As a result, the driver of the offending vehicle was reported and the vehicle prohibited from driving further until the overloaded goods were removed.

The UK’s Department for Transport states that exceeding your vehicle’s maximum gross weight will have an adverse effect on its performance and safety, as well as increase tyre wear and tear. As such, it is important to know your vehicle’s limits before loading any goods onto it.

The consequences of breaking these laws can be severe, resulting in a fine up to £2,500 or even imprisonment of up to 5 years depending on case severity. A criminal record would also remain with you for life and can affect future job prospects or travel plans.

It is essential that drivers know their vehicles’ limits before they load any goods onto them – even if it may fit within their space constraints – to ensure no legal issues arise in the event of an emergency or accident situation. Taking time to understand your vehicle’s weight restrictions will help keep you and other road users safe and avoid any hefty fines which may result from ignoring these regulations.
