Sussex Police‘s Roads Unit noticed an unstable commercial vehicle while travelling on the M25. The unit underwent a closer inspection after being stopped at Junction 9, near Leatherhead. What they found after weighing the vehicle was alarming. The vehicle was carrying significantly more weight than it was supposed to.

One axle was carrying 54.5% more weight than it should have, while the other axle was carrying 78.2% more weight, and overall, the vehicle was found to be 87.4% gross overweight. This blog will take a closer look at the dangers of overloading commercial vehicles, the consequences of driving in such a manner, and what can be done to avoid it.

Exceeding the weight limit of commercial vehicles can lead to severe accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. If a vehicle is carrying loads beyond its limit, it will have longer stopping and manoeuvring distances which may result in the driver losing control and causing accidents.

In addition, when a vehicle is overloaded, it causes more damage to its tires, braking system, engine, and suspension. This could result in the vehicle possibly failing at a very inconvenient time, posing a risk to those on the road.

In addition to the risk it poses to people’s safety, if a vehicle is found to be overloaded, it can have consequences for both the driver and their employer. Driving an overweight vehicle is illegal in the United Kingdom. The lawful maximum weight of a vehicle depends on its size, number of axles, and type.

Drivers, or their employers, who overload their vehicles may be subject to fines or, in severe cases, a conviction. The severity of the offence determines the range of penalties that can be imposed, which could include warnings, fines, suspension of licence, or imprisonment.

To avoid jeopardising lives and facing penalties, it is crucial to prevent commercial vehicles from being overloaded. To achieve this, drivers should always carefully evaluate the weight and purpose of the cargo, and before loading the vehicle, you must carefully think about the weight distribution, the load-carrying capacity, and limitations of the vehicle. It is also a good idea to also use quality weighing equipment to ensure the right amount of weight is loaded.

Another potential way to prevent overloading is by consulting with experienced transport and logistics companies. Commercial vehicle loading is done accurately and uniformly by these companies through their expertise in weight calculation. It would be smart to choose a company that has well-maintained vehicles, qualified drivers, and provides solutions that comply with industry standards and regulations.

In conclusion, it is crucial to take necessary measures to avoid overloading commercial vehicles as it is a severe offence. To keep their vehicles safe and avoid overloading, drivers and employers must abide by the law, regulations, and best practices.

Carrying too much weight in a vehicle can be very dangerous for the driver, other people using the road, and can cause damage to the environment and roads. Following the correct procedures can protect everyone involved in transport and lead to a safer and healthier environment for all.
