A heavily overloaded Mercedes Sprinter van was brought to a halt by road policing officers during a routine patrol on the M6, between Junctions 13 and 14 in Staffordshire.
The incident unfolded when officers observed the vehicle travelling at an excessive speed of 85mph – well above the limit for a goods vehicle of its class. What began as a speeding offence soon escalated into a serious case of overloading, posing multiple safety concerns.
Upon stopping the van, officers discovered it was fully laden with chicken. A thorough roadside inspection revealed that the vehicle was dangerously overweight, exceeding its gross weight limit by a staggering 61.7% – equating to approximately 2.1 tonnes. Even more concerning, the rear axle alone was found to be 60% overweight, or around 1.3 tonnes beyond the legal threshold.
As a direct consequence, the vehicle was prohibited from continuing its journey and physically immobilised with a cable to ensure it could not be moved until made safe. The driver was formally reported for all related offences, including speeding and operating an overweight vehicle.
Driving an overweight vehicle is not just a technical violation – it is a serious hazard. Excessive weight compromises the braking system, increases stopping distances, and places strain on the suspension and tyres, dramatically raising the risk of mechanical failure or loss of control.
What’s more, it also jeopardises the safety of other road users, particularly at motorway speeds.
