The National Motorcycle Unit (NMU) stopped a vehicle on Ellersly Road in Edinburgh after it appeared to be overweight. The vehicle is only meant to carry a gross weight of 3500kg.

However, upon inspection, it was revealed that the vehicle was carrying 5120kg, 46% more than it should have been. The driver has been reported to the COPFS (Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service, Scotland’s prosecution service) and the excess load has been removed.

Overloading a vehicle is extremely dangerous as it puts not only the driver at risk, but also other road users. Overweight vehicles are more difficult to control and are more likely to be involved in accidents

If you are driving a vehicle that is overweight, you are putting yourself and others at risk. The NMU is cracking down on this problem and you could face serious consequences if you are caught. It is important to make sure that your vehicle is within the legal weight limit before setting out on your journey.
