A scaffolding vehicle was recently brought to a halt on the M60 by officers from a commercial vehicle unit after concerns were raised over load security. What initially appeared to be a straightforward inspection quickly escalated into a catalogue of serious road safety breaches.

Upon further checks, officers discovered that the van was carrying a staggering 50% more than its legal limit. With its gross weight recorded at 5.2 tonnes, the vehicle was not only breaking the law but also posing a severe risk to both its driver and other road users.

To compound matters, it was also found that the driver was operating with an expired licence, further undermining their legality to be on the road.

As a result of these offences, enforcement action was swift. The vehicle was issued with a PG170 prohibition notice, immediately preventing it from being used until it complied with safety regulations. The driver, meanwhile, was formally reported for their multiple breaches of the law.

Driving an overweight vehicle is far more dangerous than many realise. The additional strain placed on brakes, suspension, and tyres significantly increases the likelihood of mechanical failure.

What’s more, stopping distances are lengthened, steering can become unpredictable, and in the event of a collision, the consequences are often catastrophic due to the excess momentum carried by the vehicle.

Equally important is the principle of road safety regulations, which are designed to protect everyone on the road. These laws are not bureaucratic red tape; they are critical safeguards that ensure vehicles are fit for purpose and drivers are properly qualified to operate them.

It should always be remembered that ignoring them not only risks fines and penalties but, more importantly, lives.

In conclusion

This incident on the M60 is a stark reminder of why enforcement checks are essential. Vehicles that breach weight limits and drivers who disregard licensing laws put themselves and countless others in unnecessary danger.

Adherence to road safety standards should never be seen as optional but as a fundamental responsibility of every driver.
