Recent enforcement action by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and Lincolnshire Police has once again drawn attention to the serious risks created by overloaded commercial vehicles on United Kingdom roads.

In two separate incidents, officers identified vehicles operating far beyond their permitted limits, with both cases highlighting the importance of accurate vehicle weighing, responsible load planning and proper fleet management.

For businesses operating vans and light commercial vehicles, the message is clear. Overloading is not a small technical oversight. It can quickly become a safety issue, a legal issue and a reputational problem for both the driver and the company involved.

DVSA Wiltshire Stop Finds Vehicle 55% Over Limit

The first incident took place at a DVSA stop point in Wiltshire, where an enforcement team stopped a vehicle they suspected to be carrying too much weight.

Following a proper inspection and weigh-in, the vehicle was found to be overloaded by 1,950kg. Against a 3,500kg limit, this meant the vehicle was operating at approximately 55% over its permitted weight.

That alone would have been a serious finding, but the situation became even more concerning when the vehicle was re-weighed after the load had been properly removed. Despite the load being taken off, the vehicle was still found to be overloaded.

At that stage, officers determined that recovery was required. A prohibition notice was issued against the vehicle, preventing it from continuing its journey, and the driver was summoned for a court deposit.

The case demonstrates how overloading can sometimes go deeper than a poorly judged load. 

If a vehicle remains overweight even after its goods have been removed, it raises questions about the vehicle’s configuration, equipment, modifications or general suitability for the work it is being used for.

Lincolnshire Police Stop Van Weighing 6,260kg

In a separate incident in Lincolnshire, a road policing unit from Lincolnshire Police stopped a 3,500kg gross weight van travelling through Boston.

The van may have appeared suitable for commercial use at first glance, but a closer inspection revealed two serious problems. Firstly, the load was found to be insecure. Secondly, the vehicle weighed in at 6,260kg.

That figure placed the van around 94% overweight, with the excess weight reportedly situated on the rear axle alone.

Rear axle overload is particularly concerning because it can dramatically affect braking performance, tyre condition, steering control and the stability of the vehicle. When a vehicle is carrying too much weight at the back, it can become harder to control, especially when turning, braking sharply or responding to unexpected road conditions.

Following the stop, both the vehicle and the driver were dealt with accordingly.

Why Overloading Is More Than A Numbers Problem

Vehicle overloading is often spoken about in terms of percentages, limits and enforcement penalties, but the real-world consequences can be much wider.

A vehicle carrying too much weight may take longer to stop, place extra stress on tyres and suspension, handle poorly, and increase the risk of mechanical failure. If the load is also insecure, the risks become even greater, as goods can shift during transit and destabilise the vehicle further.

They need reliable weighing tools that drivers, yard teams and fleet managers can use confidently before a vehicle leaves site.

From a production perspective, demand may continue to grow for systems that combine accuracy with practicality. 

Features such as digital reporting, axle-specific readings, portable set-up, rugged build quality and compliance-friendly records are likely to become increasingly valuable as enforcement bodies continue to focus on overloaded vehicles.

A Wake-Up Call For Fleet Operators

These two incidents serve as a timely reminder that weight compliance cannot be left to guesswork.

A van may look roadworthy from the outside, but without proper weighing, operators may not know whether it is legally and safely loaded. This is particularly important when vehicles are carrying dense materials, tools, machinery, construction equipment, liquids, waste, or mixed loads where weight can quickly build up.

Fleet operators should be asking practical questions before each journey. Has the load been weighed? Is the rear axle within limit? Is the total vehicle weight legal? Is the load properly secured? Is the vehicle itself suitable for the job?

When those questions are not answered properly, enforcement action can be swift and expensive.
