The Commercial Vehicle Unit of Norfolk & Suffolk Roads and Armed Policing Team, along with DVSA Enforcement conducted a road safety check operation at Elmswell. On stopping an HGV for mechanical check, the vehicle was found to be overweight by 5 tonnes.

The driver was also found to have numerous driver’s hours offences. The driver was fined and the vehicle was prohibited until the loads were reduced.

The team also stopped another vehicle on A14, carrying an abnormal load. The vehicle was moving during hours of darkness without an escort vehicle, without a movement order and with boards not spaced correctly. The driver was given a Fixed Penalty Notice for flouting the rules. The vehicle was parked up and was asked to move only with a movement order, after 2 days notice.

While travelling with abnormal load, it is compulsory to have an escort vehicle if the load is over 4.00m wide, or 25.0m long (including any outriders/tugs). You also need to give at least two full days’ notice of your journey to the local police, who will decide whether an escort is needed.

The abnormal load must be lit at night with red rear lamps, a white front lamp and a flashing amber beacon. You must also display signs showing the dimensions of the load.
