The Gwent Police Operations and Support Team conducted road safety checks as part of Project EdwardEveryday Without A Road Death. The Project Edward team works with police, road safety groups and other great partners to save lives globally.

The team stopped a flat-bed trailer carrying a truck on M4 East J24. On finding the load insecure, it was weighed and was found that the trailer was exceeding the weight limit.  The axles 4,5,6 were overweight and had no marker boards. It had no movement order as well. The driver was arrested and was also charged for carrying bladed article. A bladed article is an article with a blade or a point that is made or adapted for the purpose of causing serious injury by cutting or stabbing. Section 139 covers any ‘article’ which has a blade or is sharply pointed, except a folding pocket knife under bladed article.

It is illegal to carry a bladed article in a public place without good reason. The maximum penalty for carrying a bladed article is 4 years in prison and/or an unlimited fine. Similarly overloading a vehicle is an offence and the maximum fine a magistrate can impose is £5000. You might also be issued with points on your licence.

The Gwent Police Operations and Support Team would like to remind people to be mindful of the weight of their vehicles and to make sure that their loads are secure. They would also like to remind people not to carry bladed articles in public places.
