The Beds, Cambs & Herts Road Policing Unit recently stopped an overweight vehicle on the M25 in Watford. The flatbed truck was not the ideal choice for transporting scaffold materials and it had exceeded its gross weight limit by nearly half a ton.

While the permitted gross weight of the vehicle is 3500 kg, on weighing it was found that the vehicle was carrying 3960 kg. Therefore, there was an excess load of 460 kg, which is 13.1% overweight.  It is essential that drivers are aware of the weight capacity of their vehicles when carrying cargo as exceeding this limit can be dangerous and lead to punishments such as large fines or even jail time. Vehicles carrying heavy loads can cause excessive wear and tear on roads, leading to damage, which is why these weight restrictions exist

The Beds, Cambs & Herts Road Policing Unit’s recent incident highlights how important it is for drivers to know their vehicles’ capacities at all times when carrying loads or passengers. Therefore, it is imperative that drivers remain aware of these legal limitations while they are operating their vehicles in order to avoid any unnecessary penalties or consequences.
